Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential for health and safety when fumigating with phosphine.
The phosphine label mandates the use of a full-face respirator with a combination particulate (P1) and phosphine gas cartridge filter along with elbow-length rubber gloves to comply with label requirements.
Selecting a filter can be difficult, as not every manufacturer offers filters suitable for phosphine gas. Despite some brands offering a “type B filter for inorganic gases” like phosphine, not all “type B” filters are capable and safe to use.
For clarification, manufacturers of commonly used respirators (and filters) were contacted to provide comment and confirm the suitability of cartridges for handling phosphine.
This is a guide only, always confirm respirator and filter suitability with manufacturer or supplier.

Key Points
- Once opened, filters need to be kept in a sealed container and out of the heat and sun.
- Filters should be replaced every six months once opened – regardless of use.
- Most filters will last 5-6 years in factory-sealed packaging, so can be safely stored.
- 3M has conducted phosphine testing on filter durability. All other manufacturers recommend regular filter changes to avoid “breakthrough” whereby phosphine can be smelt or tasted through the filter.
- Generally, bayonet-style filters are cheaper to buy than canister-style filters.
- Mask fit is extremely important. Ensure sound sealing with a full-face respirator suction test.
